a college student of marked athletic ability whose normal four-year course is deliberately extended by one year, usually the sophomore year, in order that he may develop further his athletic skills.
to keep out of varsity competition for a year as a redshirt.
[so called because of the red shirts often worn by such players during practice to distinguish them from members of the varsity]
